Trams first came to Morley in 1911, much later than other areas of Leeds, having reached as far as Churwell in 1904. This postcard shows the official opening of the Morley-Leeds tramway at Churwell Dyeworks. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, former Morley Mayor Alderman William Middlebrook, had driven the tram from Leeds to Churwell and is seen here in the top hat handing over the controls to the then Mayor of Morley, Alderman Samuel Rhodes, seen on the platform of the tram, who drove it the rest of the way to Morley. The Churwell Councillor, George Smith Tetley, is hanging from the steps on the right.

Black Swan Yard in Leeds city centre pictured in October 1898. Part of North Street Improvement Area, was number 2 North Street, now part of Vicar Lane. On the left houses, some with basements, access down steps from pavement. Railings act as barriers to open area. There are two wall signs for T. Butter, Coach builder. At the end of the yard are outside toilets and a cart. To the right, premises with wooden steps to upper doors. Yard has some cobbles, other parts unsurfaced.

Around 80 people marched in driving snow on a Saturday in December 1988 to protest at increased police presence and alleged harassment in the community. The march was organised by some residents in the community angry about a police initiative which had doubled the number of officers on the beat. Their action drew an immediate response from a police chief who claimed only a quarter of the 400 names on a petition were genuine and that the initiative was supported by the majority of residents.
