Dogs Trust

Dog Trust Leeds' have issued important advice on keeping dogs safe this winter.

How to keep your dog safe this winter

Lovely Luna, an eight-month-old Husky pup, was one of the more than 50 adoptions already completed in November.

Brother and sister Amy and Alfie find themselves looking for a new home at 15-years-old. They like a peaceful life, so a busy household with other pets would not suit them, but calm children would be fine. Their days of long walks are behind them, but Alfie still enjoys a gentle potter. Amy prefers to relax indoors and snooze on her bed.

Atticus is a one-year-old Malinois Crossbreed who is looking for confident adopters to transition him into a new home. He has made fantastic progress at Dogs Trust in Leeds, but will need to gradually build his confidence with new friends - and the training team are ready to help with this.

Two-year-old ex-racing Greyhound Brady loves fuss and going on walks. He would make the ideal family pet.

Amy and Alfie, a pair of 15-year-old Pug crosses, came to the centre through no fault of their own. They are brother and sister and have always lived together - they're often found following each other around their foster home. A new, calm and quiet home would suit them, where they would be fine to be left for a couple of hours on their own. Potential adopters shouldn't let Amy and Alfie's age put them off, as they are the perfect houseguests in their current foster home.

Bailey is five years old and is looking for an active family to help him as he learns. He is worried by other dogs and barks when he sees them, but is still very manageable and happily wears a muzzle when out and about. Bailey would need to be the only pet in the home and would not suit children, but would be fine with confident teenagers. He loves to play off the lead so would need a secure garden.

Handsome one-year-old Atticus, a Malinois Crossbreed, has been practicing tricks with his handler this month. He has just been made available for adoption and would suit adopters who understand the breed - in the right home he will settle well.

There is never a dull moment with Star and this week she enjoyed some off-lead agility. The eight-year-old Crossbreed has been waiting for her home for some time. The team at Dogs Trust cannot understand why it is taking so much time because she is so fun to be around.

Kloppy is a three-year-old ex-racing Greyhound with a sweet nature. She would be fine with children who are confident around larger dogs. Kloppy is currently living in a foster home and everyone there has fallen in love with her. She is chilled and enjoys playing with toys. Kloppy would make a perfect family pet.

Coco has been jumping for joy on her off-lead play sessions. The bubbly one-year-old Lurcher has had an unsettled life so far, which means that her adopters must be prepared to work with the training team during her transition to a new home. Her training at the centre has been going well and she has proven that, with a little consistency, she can thrive.

Pinto is a seven-year-old Dalmatian who likes to be everyone's friend. He is great with other dogs and could live with another sociable canine companion. He could also be adopted with his kennel buddy Sid, another seven-year-old Dalmatian, if the right family has space for two boys. Pinto is a fun-loving and friendly dog who loves to eat and is keen to show off to earn a treat. He would suit an active family looking for a smart, energetic and affectionate dog.

Over the Coronation weekend, it was business as usual for the rehoming centre staff. However, there was time to celebrate with the rescue dogs by holding afternoon tea parties in celebration of King Charles. Five-year-old Lurcher Missi enjoyed herself with handler Jude. Picture: Dogs Trust.

Vera is a 2-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross. She is a fun-loving girl who is always happy to go off in a car for long walks and adventures. Vera is looking for a calm adult only home and to be the only pet in the house. She knows some basic tricks which she is happy to show you in exchange for a yummy treat. She really loves her human friends and is very affectionate once she knows and trusts you.

Rocket was full of Springtime smiles when we joined him on an off-lead exercise session in the centre’s enclosed field.
He is a fun and playful six-year-old Shar Pei Cross Vizsla. He has a few anxieties so will be best in an adult only home with no visiting children and few visitors generally. Once Rocket knows you, he is a wonderful, joyous dog to be around. He is fun and playful, particularly when his toys come out

Coco is a very bubbly one-year-old Lurcher who sadly has had a very unsettled start to life. This has left her with a few anxieties. She is doing well with her training and her confidence is slowly growing but she needs a new family who are keen to work with our team to continue this in her new home. She is playful with other dogs and could potentially live with another dog pending them getting along.
Coco is a very fun and playful dog who also has a very affectionate side to her once she’s bonded with you. She's a super smart cookie and really does enjoy learning new things so if you also enjoy a little fun dog training you will have a great time with her.

The team at the York Road Rehoming centre in Leeds have had another busy month with 52 dogs, like Pablo photographed here, leaving the centre already in March. It’s been a complete mix of dogs of all shapes and sizes and they’re all settling well in their forever homes.

Tulip is a gorgeous 6-month-old Staffy Lurcher Crossbreed who has led a very sheltered life so far. She has a few anxieties that mean she needs very patient and understanding adopters who will be happy to take their time getting to know her and have a keen interest in dog training. She needs a very calm and predictable home so young children or lots of visitors won't be suitable. Older teenagers will be fine as long as they understand they will need to let her come round in her own time. She will need a secure garden so she has somewhere to practice her lead training and house training. She's not ready to share her home with another pet but she would definitely benefit from continuing her dog socialisation once she's settled into her new life.

We were sent this lovely photo of Pippa, who is living off-site in a foster home. She’s a lovely 10-year-old Crossbreed who is looking for her forever home.
Her foster carer decided to treat her to a lovely new bandana for Valentine’s Day and we think she looks super cute!
She’d love to find a calm and peaceful retirement home to relax in and shower you in love! So if you are looking for a sweet natured and relaxed companion, Pippa might be a perfect match for you.

Toffee is a stunning seven year old Beagle Crossbreed. He's looking for patient adopters who'll give him plenty of time to settle into his new home and be around all the time to make this much easier. Toffee is a classic Hound through and through! He loves people and enjoys nothing more than getting out and about sniffing out exciting trails. Like all dogs of his type, he has a voice and likes to use it, but a true Hound lover will find this nothing but adorable! He enjoys learning new things, so once he's built a good relationship you'll find him to be a fun and interactive lad.

Lexi, a three-year-old Boxer cross, was one of the many lucky dogs to be adopted this month. It seems that 2023 has started with a real bang and in total the rehoming centre has successfully rehomed over 70 dogs in January alone! That’s a lot of happy boys and girls all settling into their forever homes.

Behind the scenes at Leeds Dogs Trusts as the team share this month's highlights

Max is a stunning eight-year-old German Shepherd who is living off site in a foster home where he is being the perfect house guest! He absolutely loves his treats - his foster carer has been doing some basic training with him and he’s shown himself to be a quick learner! Max can be strong on the lead so would need adopters who are able to handle his strength. He enjoys a fuss and despite his size, he likes to get on the sofa with his foster carers for a cuddle. If you’re looking for a real sofa buddy then Max might be the perfect match for you.

The centre cared for and rehomed 114 puppies over the year. They were a real mix of breeds and ages, with some litters being born on site and even in foster homes, but thankfully all the pups who found themselves in the care of Dogs Trust Leeds are now living happily in their forever homes. Little Spot, pictured, was handed over at 8 weeks old after a member of his family found themselves to be allergic. Being deaf meant he needed to learn some simple sign language to set him up for his adult life, but he soon figured things out and was adopted a few weeks later.

We are in LOVE with Jake’s special Christmas portrait!
He’s an eight-year-old Lurcher who needs very special adopters who will come and get to know him slowly due to his shyness around new people. We’ve seen how playful and affectionate he is once he has bonded so believe us when we say he’s well worth the time and effort!

Meet the dogs up for adoption this Christmas

Florence is a five-month-old Lurcher and a real sweetheart, but her anxieties and low confidence tend to leave her very worried around new people, places, or unfamiliar sounds. Her handlers have been doing some great work with her and she has come on leaps and bounds already, but her new family must be prepared to put in some hard work initially to help settle her in properly. The team believes that living with another dog who is calm and well trained would really help her find her feet. Once she has bonded with you she has a very playful side and loves playing with her toys. She is also very affectionate and loves to snuggle with her friends. She just needs you to give her the time and space initially to come out of her shell.

We caught little Monty having a cheeky snooze in his kennel!
He’s a super cute three yr old Toy Poodle Cross who is quite a shy character. He needs very patient adopters who will take their time getting to know him and live in a calm and predictable environment. Once he’s comfortable and formed a relationship, he is a real sweet lad to have around.

GREAT News Alert! At long last, Trigger is leaving the building! Back in April this bundle of Staffy cheekiness arrived after his owner sadly passed away. He found the ordeal very difficult, and the Training and Behaviour team had to work very hard to help get him back on track, but the hard work was well worth it. This week he's left for his new home and his favourite handlers all came out to wish him well.
Good Luck Trigger!

Meet some of the lovable dogs up for rehoming in the city

Poor Ella arrived in a very sorry state after being hit by a car. Her ordeal has left her very wary of people and she takes time to put her trust into strangers. Ella has befriended some of the staff that look after her regularly and they have seen a totally different side to her. She is giddy, friendly and her confidence has really started to grow.
Ella will need an enclosed escape proof garden as walks may be off the cards initially. She is worried about other dogs and will need to be the only pet in a quiet home with older children maybe 14 and over.

Meet some of the dogs looking for their forever home

Nelly and her best friend Ella have a close bond and would like to find a home together. They are around 5-6 years old and a little reserved to start with but after a hands-off approach and a few tasty treats they will be your best friends forever. Nelly and Ella will need an enclosed garden for house training and a safe place to get to know their new owners. They are active dogs and once settled in will love long walks with their new family.

Jack is a lively 7-year-old Lurcher who still thinks he is a puppy! He is an energetic and fun dog who loves the busy family life and would fit into an active household with children 15 and over. Jack will need an enclosed garden for off lead zoomies and playtime with his new family.

River, a one-year-old Rottweiler, was handed over to the rehoming centre back in May due to a change in her owners’ circumstances. It took a few months for her to find her forever home due to some training needs, but the team worked super hard with her, and this week she left to start her new life with her new family, where she even has a new doggy brother to play with!
Good luck River.

Edie joined us for a special Halloween Trick or Treat Scent Trail.
She loves to use her nose, so the staff set a trail of treats through the woodland, and she sniffed out every single one!
She loves getting out and about on peaceful walks where she won’t see other dogs and is looking for patient adopters who will give her time to slowly come out of her shell. Once you’re in her gang she’s the most playful, snuggly and smart girl, so she’s well worth the effort.

The dogs up for adoption this Halloween

We saw Kathka, a 13 year old Husky, enjoying some time relaxing in the sunshine with her favourite handler Jemma.
We can’t believe that Kathka is 13 years old! She is such a fun and bubbly girl who clearly enjoys her walkies. She is super friendly with people and dogs, but as she doesn’t like to share, she isn’t looking to live with any other pets. She needs a calm and peaceful home with kids no younger than 16. So don’t be put off by her age! She will make a fun and active member of the family.

Bear is a very handsome chap at only nine months old. He is still a baby and has a lot to learn but already knows the basic commands, walking nicely on a lead is something he hasn't yet mastered! Bear is very bouncy, and puppy like in his behaviour so due to his size would be too much for children. Sensible older teens could be a possibility as he is used to being around them. He is a very foodie boy so should be easily workable and good at training.

The dogs looking for their forever home this week

We spotted the adorable Rocky taking a snooze in the Autumn sunshine! He’d been out for an off-lead play session and whilst snuggling with his handler he nodded off!
He’s a 10-year-old Staffy and a real happy little chap! He’ll be fine with kids over 10 years old but he’s not looking to share with any other pets. If you’re looking for a sweet and playful boy to join your family, then Rocky might be your perfect match!

The dogs up for rehoming this week

Apollo is a sweet natured crossbreed who is around 18 months old. He is looking for patient adopters who will be happy to visit him multiple times at the centre to build a relationship before he's ready to go home. He has a degenerative condition with his hips, so we don't expect him to reach his twilight years, but he'll have a good few years of fun and lots of love to give. Due to his size and medical needs he won't suit a home with children. He's looking for a peaceful adult only home where he can get loads of attention from his family. Although he enjoys having walking buddies, living with another dog will be too much for him so he needs to be the only pet in his home.
