In his weekly column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Danny Mei Lan Malin shares his thoughts on this award-winning kebab shop in Leeds.

Everyone remembers their first kebab.

Like me, it may have started as an end of night stagger home treat. But now, I choose to eat a good kebab when I'm getting a takeaway delivered and fully sober.

A good coffee doesn’t need lots of milk and syrups - and it’s the same with kebabs. You don’t need lots of sauce if it’s good meat. I do however enjoy a bit of chilli sauce and garlic mayo.

There are lots of places I enjoy in Leeds city centre, one of my favourites to eat at any time of day is Sqew in Duncan Street.

Fresh salad pairs well with good meat. At Sqew, you can get kebab meat on platters served with salad and fries and it’s gorgeous.

On my most recent visit, I also had chicken shawarma in middle eastern flatbread. I am normally a naan bread man; I love thin and crispy freshly-made naan.

But this shawarma was delicious and paired brilliantly with a bit of sauce.

Sqew deliver but another great option for a takeaway kebab is Abdul’s, on the outskirts of Wakefield

My go-to order there is a Tak Tak kebab, which is made up of chicken, spiced lamb doner and served on a naan.

For something a little different, I love Pizza Pizza’s kebab meat on pizzas and in calzones.

While they are based in Commercial Street, Leeds city centre, they will soon be opening at the Rate My Takeaway Kitchen in Huddersfield.

If you’re trying a kebab place for the first time, here are some tips to find a good place:

  • Always choose somewhere busy. Sounds simple but people go for places with short or no queues but if it’s good a kebab place will be busy. Full stop.

  • The key thing to look for is that the kebab meat machine is always rotating. It means they’re busy. Always run a mile if their machine is turned on and off as that means they’re not busy and will be reheating the meat.

  • Find somewhere with freshly chopped salad and freshly made bread.
