Thrill-seekers have been invited to step into the pages of “twisted” fairy tales where "happily ever afters" don't exist at a new Halloween experience in Leeds this October.

Aimed at eight- to 15-year-olds, "Once Upon a Nightmare" is an immersive scare event that will transform the normally serene grounds and gardens at Lotherton in Aberford into a “haunting world where fairy tale creatures live out their darkest versions of reality”.

Visitors can expect a 30-minute walk through the "misty" grounds of the estate after dark, guided only by the faint glow of lanterns.

Throughout the walk, famous and usually cheerful storybook characters have warped into the stuff of nightmares, such as Snow White shadowed by a "fateful curse".

"Once Upon a Nightmare" is delivered by Breeze at Lotherton, both part of Leeds City Council, and is on from October 25 to 31, with 30-minute slots running from 5pm to 8.30pm.

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said: “Whether you’re a fan of fairy tales or just enjoy a good scare, this event promises to be an unforgettable experience.

"It’s a spooky event but it’s all been planned with young people in mind, so it’s a perfect way for the family to experience a thrilling Halloween together.”

From October 4, the estate is also hosting its first ever pumpkin patch experience where guests can go on a tractor ride and choose a pumpkin to bring home and carve.
