'Worth it': The dish that made Danny Malin turn down fish and chips in Whitby
Popular Yorkshire food reviewer Danny Malin turned down fish and chips for something different at Whitby Goth Weekend
Ever since I could drive I’ve enjoyed driving everything from a little old banger to big delivery vans. I’m the last person I ever thought would go on a coach trip.
Yet last week I helped to open the second ticket office for Yorkshire Rose Holidays, a coach trip company, inside Halifax Borough Market.
I’d only ever been on coaches on airport transfers abroad until I met Dave from Yorkshire Rose at Barnsley Market.
He convinced me to try their coaches because Dave was confident even big guys like me would have plenty of space. Yorkshire Rose have continued with social distancing rules since the pandemic to allow for extra legroom.

My first official coach trip was earlier this year to Whitby Goth Weekend.
Normally I’m stressed out trying to park in Whitby. So not only was it less stressful, more spacious but taking the coach was cheaper too.
It meant I had a full day out in Whitby. I always rave about The Magpie in Whitby for fish and chips and the wife loves Hetty & Betty there for a vegan chippy afternoon tea. This time I opted for Fisherman’s Wife for their seafood pie and new potatoes. Never did I think I’d turn down fish and chips by the coast but for this dish, it’s worth it.
As it was Whitby Goth Weekend we were determined to try black ice cream from Trillo’s. It was a nice vanilla flavour complete with a black cone.
Normally I’m a fan of the lemon top but I did see a few places do black ice creams with a lemon top as well as sherbet toppings.
They also have independent markets throughout the weekend and all year around so I made sure to buy some of my favourite Portuguese tarts.
Needless to say I was in a food coma on the coach home so I had a nap.
Yorkshire Rose Holidays later asked me for recommendations of fish and chip shops to visit near the coast or en route for some of their other trips.
For big parties of people I’d recommend stopping off at Thompsons Fish and Chips in York or Murgatroyd’s in Yeadon.
