'Banging': Danny Malin finds the best chippy outside the UK run by a Sheffield local in Las Vegas
Popular Yorkshire food reviewer Danny Malin reveals why a chip shop in Nevada run by a Sheffield expat is serving up "black market" gravy and the ultimate chippy tea outside of the UK
Finally, the wintry weather is here, giving us all a good excuse for a proper chippy tea.
When I’m at home in West Yorkshire, I’m spoiled for choice. My absolute favourites include The Kingfisher in Calder Grove and George-A-Green in Wakefield, which is proper banging.
Then over in Leeds, you’ve got Murgatroyd’s and Miners, which are both top-notch.

Further afield in York, I love Thompson’s or The Scrap Box. Down in South Yorkshire, there’s Sheffield’s oldest chippy, Two Steps on Sharrowvale Road - a spot that has stood the test of time for very good reason.
Right on the edge of Sheffield in Derbyshire, there’s another banger: Toll Bar in Stoney Middleton, serving good old-fashioned fish and chips alongside pigs in blankets.
And, of course, if I’m heading to the coast, it’s The Magpie in Whitby for a classic seaside portion.
Finding home comforts in Sin City
When I’m travelling abroad, I usually prefer to try the local cuisine. But as a reviewer, my job is to find top spots I can recommend to people who crave a proper taste of home when they're away.
So far, there have been very few chip shops outside of the UK I could honestly recommend - especially not in America.
That was until I discovered The Codfather in Las Vegas.
Based out in Henderson, Nevada, this place is run by a lad from Sheffield who knows exactly what he's doing.
I went all-in on the menu, ordering battered haddock and chips, mushy pea fritters, and a tub of gravy - and when I spotted Yorkshire Tea on the counter, I had to have a pot of that, too.
The chips immediately brought back memories of those proper, homemade, hand-cut chips my mum used to cook in a deep fat fryer at home. The batter on the fish was lovely and crisp, and the mushy pea fritters were chunky and packed with flavour.
But the real star of the show was the gravy. Wow. This was black market stuff—quite possibly the best gravy I’ve ever had in my life.
People think I’m weird because not only do I have gravy on my chips, but on my fish too.
Before you turn your nose up at it, I’d urge you to try it first.
A proper taste of Yorkshire in Nevada
Alongside classic fish and chips, The Codfather keeps the Northern heritage alive with menu staples you'd struggle to find anywhere else in North America, including:
- Sheffield Fish Cakes and Spam Fritters
- Traditional Chip Shop Gravy & Curry Sauce
- Classic British Puddings, including Black Forest gateaux and homemade trifle
If you ever find yourself out in Sin City and missing a proper taste of Yorkshire, this place is well worth the trip out to Henderson.
