Workers are now visible scaling the scaffolding surrounding The Core, which first welcomed shoppers in 1987.
In its place, three modern glass-fronted buildings will rise, featuring student accommodation and commercial units.
Yorkshire Evening Post photographer Tony Johnson captured the ongoing demolition as the transformation begins.

Residents welcomed the end of the shopping centre, with one telling the YEP: "I think it's a sad reflection as I know various units have closed down. More student accommodation is great as I think that bring in more money to the city. If it's able to bring people right into the city centre and regenerate what is a flagging area then I don't have any issues." | Tony Johnson for National World

Another resident added: "I think this is a good idea to add more student accommodation because there are a lot of students in Leeds. Finding student accommodation is hard but finding shops is not that hard so I think this is a good idea." | Tony Johnson for National World

Debating the shopping centre's future in March 2024, Coun Colin Campbell said: “If you look at the existing building, it’s of it’s time and I think it’s time is passed. It’s not doing much for the Headrow at the moment.” | Tony Johnson for National World
