Voujon review: I tried this incredible Indian restaurant that is upping the standards in Leeds
The standard of Indian restaurants in Leeds is certainly something that the city can be proud of.
And at Voujon on Otley Road staff are striving to be at the very top of that competitive pile - with extraordinary results.
The fabulous, fine-dining venue is situated in Far Headingley on the outer reaches of the Otley Run and is definitely worth a visit.

Owner Syed Miah has been steadily crafting the menu since the venue opened in 2018 to reflect the more spice-friendly tastes of the Leeds locale while also ensuring there is something for everyone.
Upon arriving at the Otley Road restaurant, we were taken to a cosy corner among the smart and understated environment, which acts as an ideal getaway as the winter evenings begin to draw in.
Syed was superb when it came to serving us; taking our taste preferences onboard before recommending dishes that we felt supremely confident in going ahead with.
The pickle tray and poppadoms to kick us off were delightful, with the creamy mint yoghurt and juicy chutney evidencing how the kitchen goes above and beyond to make even the most minor dishes exceptional.

For starters we were greeted with a sizzling mixed kebab that featured beautifully cooked chicken, lamb and seekh kebab, served with a delightful tandoori marinade. It was served alongside charred onions and a refreshing, coriander-strewn salad. It was a wonderful taste explosion.
As we waited for the mains, we watched Syed and the rest of the team take out a selection of the restaurant’s staple dishes that only whetted the appetite further. Among them was the Special Sizzler Juliette, which features a dramatic brandy-soaked flambee that caught the attention of the entire room, and an succulent-looking leg of lamb for a table of six that appeared perfect for any major event. The latter, Syed told us, takes 48 hours to prepare and needs to be ordered in advance, but was "out of this world", according to the table that ordered it.

Right on cue our mains arrived. After telling Syed that I preferred a medium-spiced, flavoursome lamb-based dish, I was served up a Lamb Aflatoon, which hit the culinary nail on the head.
Featuring a combination of tandoori and balti spices, the dish was full of smoky, well-rounded flavour and cooked with, as guaranteed in all the dishes, a studied level of finesse.
It came intriguingly served on a heated tray and accompanied by pilau rice and fresh naan bread that, again, seemed to have that extra special something.

While we stuck to water for the night, the restaurant does include an extensive drink list featuring wines and spirits and a choice of crisp lagers.
Full to the brim, Syed kindly arranged a takeout bag for the remainder of my Aflatoon before sending me off in a markedly more contented state.
