Marcelo Bielsa's Whites dominated the first half of Monday's encounter with nine attempts at goal compared to Wolves' two but were unable to find a breakthrough and paid the price in the second half.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side came storming back to create a host of chances themselves and bagged the only goal of the game with 20 minutes left when a Jimenez strike from the edge of the box took a huge deflection off Kalvin Phillips to beat Whites 'keeper Illan Meslier.

The win sent Wolves up to sixth with last season's seventh-placed finishers having now taken nine points out of a possible 15.

Leeds are now tenth ahead of Friday night's quick return to action at second-placed Aston Villa.

Jimenez told www.wolves.co.uk: “It’s always good to win, especially to come here in this kind of stadium, because they are a good team.

“We knew this game was going to be tough, but we faced it as we know; as a team, as we were doing the last two seasons, and we came here with all the personality to take the result.

“In the first-half, we didn’t find the way to resist their attack, to resist their press, but in the second-half, we had the ball, we played better and we found the spaces in the back, and I think we deserved this win.

“They are very tough. They press in the spaces, they go man-to-man, so we knew it was going to be a difficult game, and we faced it like it was.”

Reflecting on his 70th-minute winner, Jimenez said: "It’s difficult to score against these kinds of teams.

"My first two goals of the season before this one were first touch; one header, one with the right foot, and this one I had to drive with the ball, create my own space.

“They press very well and if he doesn’t touch it, I think it’s going to be a fantastic goal! No, but it was lucky for me.

“Sometimes, strikers need that little bit of fortune to score their goals, but we deserved it and it’s all about the team’s persistence.”
