Paul Scholes and Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson are in agreement over Patrick Bamford’s importance to Leeds United.

Bamford has struggled with injury of late, something he will have wanted to avoid after suffering a number of injury issues last season. The striker missed 30 games in all across three separate injuries last season, and that made things tough for Leeds as they battled against the drop.

Battling those injuries, Bamford could only manage two goals and as many assists last season, but in the campaign prior, he scored as many as 17, assisting eight. It’s that sort of form the Whites want to see from their frontman, but they are going to have to keep him fit.

Thankfully, after suffering a knock, Bamford has returned, with Jesse Marsch saying after the striker returned to face Aston Villa: “Patrick had a little bit of a knock that he took and wasn’t able to train all week. So he was a little bit in question whether he was going to be available or not. I decided not to tell you guys that two days ago.”

With Bamford’s return, BT Sport pundit Scholes highlighted the striker’s importance to Leeds, telling Premier League productions: “The atmosphere is brilliant at Leeds. Once you get them fans going, it’s a really tough place to go. Has he got the team this year to survive? I don’t know.

“On the evidence against Aston Villa, they didn’t look great, they didn’t look like they had much of a threat up front. Obviously, getting Bamford fit will be a big bonus for them. But the lad just can’t seem to stay fit for long.

“If he stays fit, then they have a chance because he scores goals, but they were lucky against Aston Villa and it was only Villa’s bad finishing that got them the point.”

That’s something former Leeds keeper turned Sky Sports pundit Robinson agrees with, telling MOT Leeds News that the striker’s return is a ‘huge boost’.

He said in late September: “Even if it’s the Under-21s, it’s nice to see him hitting the back of the net again. Yes, it’s obviously nowhere near the level of a Premier League game. But the fact he’s playing, the fact he’s fit and the fact he’s scoring goals is a huge boost for Leeds fans.

“With the way they played against Brentford, they need him, Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper back. The fact Bamford is playing and scoring goals again means his arrival is imminent.”
