Harry Wilson transfer claim as ex-Fulham boss questions Leeds United move

Leeds United snapped up the Welsh winger on a free transfer this summer.

New Leeds United winger Harry Wilson has been accused of taking ‘a bit of a sideways step’ by a former Fulham manager.

Wilson ran down his Fulham contract last season while registering an impressive 10 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League games. The 29-year-old’s form, coupled with his imminent free agent status, attracted plenty of attention but Leeds had been at the table for several months.

The Whites attempted to sign Wilson on deadline day last summer and eventually got their man 10 months later, the Welshman signing a four-year contract. He flew out to the USA with Daniel Farke’s squad and could feature against Wrexham this weekend.

But former Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen believes European football could have been on the cards for Wilson next season. He expects Leeds to have offered a better contract than Craven Cottage chiefs, however.

“Harry Wilson will probably have a better contract at Leeds than he had at Fulham,” Meulensteen told Andy’s Bet Club. “Something about the move must have triggered his interest, although he might have been hoping for a team in Europe when he was playing so well last season.

“It is a bit of a sideways step. He is a player who can make a difference and will definitely help Leeds. He must be happy with the move to sign such a long contract.”

Wilson admitted after signing that Leeds’ previous interest influenced his decision, as did the persuasive nature of Welsh teammates including Ethan Ampadu. He will hope to give fans a glimpse of his quality against boyhood club Wrexham this weekend.

Leeds face the Championship side in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, with games against Sunderland and Liverpool to follow. The Whites then face RB Leipzig, Manchester United and FC Augsburg before kicking off their Premier League season at Nottingham Forest on Saturday August 22.
