"It is at the end of the day" - Ethan Ampadu on Leeds United must after Bournemouth loss with honest admission
Ethan Ampadu on Leeds United’s defeat at Bournemouth.
Ethan Ampadu has outlined a Leeds United must in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat at Bournemouth with an honest admission despite the overall scoreline feeling.
Leeds travelled to the south coast to face a Cherries side who had won their last five games in all competitions without scoring a goal yet Daniel Farke’s Whites dominated the opening exchanges and looked to have gone ahead through Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Whites no 9 finished off a lovely move by bundling home James Justin’s cross but VAR intervened to check for handball and the goal was disallowed as replays showed Calvert-Lewin had made the last contact of the ball with his arm.
United continued on the front foot but a goalkeeping error from James Trafford then led to the Cherries taking the lead, Trafford’s attempted pass for Ao Tanaka intercepted by Justin Kluivert who teed up Evanilson for a tap in.
It looked set to prove the only goal of the game but Bournemouth later bagged a second goal deep in second half stoppage time through Amine Aldi.
Speaking post match to LUTV, Ampadu said the defeat did not feel like a 2-0 game but the skipper admitted his team could be better and must now look back at the display and find ways to improve.
“It is at the end of the day so we have to look at what we can do better”
“Yeah, absolutely frustrating,” said Ampadu, as quoted by Leeds United’s official website.
“It didn't really feel like a 2-0 game, but it is at the end of the day so we have to look at what we can do better. They only had a couple of chances and they put them in the back of the net. Maybe as a team, as a whole team, we can be better.
“We knew they play with a lot of intensity, and so do we. So we wanted to make sure that we matched that. We wanted to win that battle and we knew that this game was going to come down to small chances.
“Maybe on another day the game would go a bit differently, but unfortunately today it wasn't to be. So, yeah, like I said at the start, we have to look back on it and see what we can do better.”
