James Trafford full-time reaction, Daniel Farke card and off-camera Leeds United moments at Bournemouth
The YEP’s take and off-camera moments from Leeds United’s 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth.
Leeds United finally fell to a second loss of the Premier League season as Saturday’s clash down on the south coast at AFC Bournemouth ended in a 2-0 defeat. Here’s the YEP’s take from the game and some off-camera moments.
Good day
Sean Longstaff
It wasn’t a good day for anybody really from a Leeds United point of view but Sean Longstaff yet again impressed the most of the subs. With Anton Stach unable to make the XI to his foot problem it was a surprise that he didn’t start to be honest, boss Daniel Farke instead going with Dan James who it must be said started very well but then faded a bit, particularly in the second half. Longstaff, Stach and Lukas Nmecha were then all brought on as part of a triple change in the 65th minute as James, Ao Tanaka and Gabi Gudmundsson made way, Longstaff immediately impressing in buzzing about with some neat passes and shots at goal. Looks well worth a start against Spurs on Saturday.
Bad day
James Trafford
There’s no beating around the bush, Trafford’s mistake was a Halloween horror that gifted Bournemouth the lead when they were severely under the cosh and very lucky not to be trailing. His short pass out of defence to Ao Tanaka that Justin Kluivert intercepted was about as big a turning point as it gets and we’ll never know what might have happened had that mistake been avoided. But mistakes are part and parcel of the game and Trafford just needs to ensure they are few and far between. He also quickly regained his composure from the blunder and made dome good saves after the break. Nevertheless, a bad day for sure. They happen.
Off-camera moments
Plenty of fans in Leeds shirts in and around Bournemouth in less expected places such as at Bournemouth station even on Friday morning and another down a leafy estate on Saturday morning, again showing the huge support for the club.
Bournemouth handing out KitKats to the press as they entered the stadium. Not a trick but a treat on Halloween from them. The city was then awash with revellers dressed up in all sorts of outfits on Saturday night by which time Leeds were on their home as part of an October 31 to forget.
Ex-Whites ace Tony Dorigo looking in very good spirits before kick-off as he met a few fans in the stand, appearing to record a video birthday message for someone.
Trafford saluting the first few away fans to take their seats inside the ground by applauding them as he began the keepers warm up. Ethan Ampadu then gave the fans a wave as the outfield players began their warm ups.
A sea of yellow away shirts glistening in the late October sun in the away end in temperatures of around 15 degrees. The game was played under blue skies and it did not feel like November was on its way the next day.
An absolutely impeccably observed minutes’ silence and Last Post in Bournemouth’s last home before Remembrance Sunday. Farke and Rose both laid wreaths and the whole ground stayed absolutely silent in the Vitality Stadium sunshine for the Last Post. It was a lovely moment.
Farke’s furious reaction when referee Michael Salisbury booked Nico Elvedi for a soft foul midway through the first half, the latest in a number of very soft decisions given against Leeds in the first half. It tipped Farke over the edge and Salisbury issued him with a yellow card, not the sort of card Farke was after the day after his 50th birthday. Upon receiving his booking the German threw his arms in the air and trudged back to his bench.
A bit of buzz as Farke finally decided to throw on Jean-Matteo Bahoya in the 84th minute, a couple of days on from his epic answer about the young winger and call to cool down any hype. Bahoya was then presented with a chance to shoot seconds after coming on but sliced a wild effort well wide.
The clear dejection felt by United’s players as Salisbury finally blew up for full time and confirmation of just a second Premier League defeat of the season for Leeds. There is absolutely no disgrace in losing to this impressive Cherries side who might well end up knocking on the door of the top six. Nonetheless, Leeds had began so well that it felt like one that got away although it has to be said their attacking player was pretty limp after the break.
The full time reaction of a clearly furious Trafford, the keeper booting the ball into touch as Salisbury blew his full time whistle. After hugs from a few teammates and Bournemouth players, the Leeds team eventually went over to the away end where they were plenty of hands on hips. It has hard not to feel for Trafford whose face said it all as he stared into space and then trudged off down the tunnel. The keeper though the received huge support from Farke and also Bournemouth boss Rose in the post match press conferences. No need for a Halloween witch hunt.
