Snow began to fall in the early hours of the morning and by daybreak most of the city was coated in several inches of the white stuff.

And although the rain followed, it wasn't enough to wash away the snow day and Leeds residents from Cookridge to Chapel Allerton grabbed their sledges and set off for a day of building snowmen and enjoying some light relief from lockdown.

The snow caused disruption to schools with the vast majority of schools shutting their doors even to the children of key workers, while snowy conditions made life tough for bus drivers. First Bus announced that it was running services only to main roads by 9am, while many routes were cut short or diverted.

West Yorkshire Police advised motorists not to travel, while footage of cars spinning their wheels and lorries struggling in Calverley went viral on our website.

Leeds Council announced in the morning that libraries, community hubs and recycling centres would close, while bin collections were suspended.

But that wasn't before two binmen took it upon themselves to shoot a quirky video in the snow, taking aim at a national story about a binman getting in trouble when he knocked over a snowman, by building and destroying their own snowman while on their bin round in Harehills.

Elsewhere, vaccination centres stayed open and carried on delivering Covid jabs, but a spokesman for the NHS said that anyone who had struggled to make an appointment would have their shot rescheduled.

The Met Office is not predicting further snow - the forecast for Wednesday is much clearer, with only some cloud cover to contend with as temperatures rise to peaks of 7C.

A spokesperson for Leeds Council said: "In terms of any bin collections that have been missed, we will try and collect missed bins over the next two days and will be prioritising black bins. However, if your bin is not collected by Thursday then please take it in and wait until the next collection."

The authority added that it has continued to grit major routes including around vaccination centres and that it 'fully expects' recycling centres to reopen on Wednesday.
