Many people across Leeds and Yorkshire woke up this morning to snow that had settled on roads and pavements.

The heavy snow has made roads dangerous and difficult to drive on and The West Yorkshire Prepared Forum, which is made up of emergency services, councils, travel and utilities bodies, has urged people not to travel today.

This video of cars, lorries and buses stuck with spinning wheels on the Ring Road in Calverley shows just how dangerous travelling in the snow can be.

One car became unavoidably close to a lorry and another car had to be pushed whilst a bus came to a halt.

The weather has caused delays for a number of buses, with First Bus only running on main roads and a number of services being delayed, and problems for lorries as well after the M62 was closed after a lorry jackknifed across all lanes.

West Yorkshire Prepared Forum's tips for driving in snow and ice:

- Only travel if absolutely necessary.

- You must be able to see, so clear ALL snow and ice from windows, mirrors and the roof (to stop it slipping onto the windscreen when braking!)

-Wear comfortable, dry shoes for driving.

- Drive carefully. Pull away in 2nd gear where possible, low revs and a gentle right foot so the wheels don’t spin.

- Prevent your windscreen misting up by cleaning it with shaving foam

- Stick to main gritted routes where possible and stay off closed roads.

- Plan well ahead when driving to avoid having to stop or slow down on hills.

- Drive slowly around bends, where loss of control is a risk.

- Reduce speed early and gently, use a low gear and engine breaking, try not to be heavy on the brakes so you don’t slide.

- Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front, stopping distances can increase by ten times dry weather distances.

- Gritted roads can still be slippery - always drive for the weather conditions.

They tweeted today: "Heavy snow across the region this morning. Please only head out if absolutely necessary.

"If you do NEED to go out, make sure you're prepared by completing a WINTER driving checklist."

Leeds City Council has cancelled all bin collections due to very heavy snow and subsequent difficult conditions on roads and paths.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Leeds which was in place from 10pm on Monday and lasts until 11:59pm on Tuesday night.

There was also a more severe amber weather warning in place until 1pm on Tuesday because of the disruption that was likely to be caused by the snow.

The forecast is now for heavy rain, drizzle and fog throughout the evening.
