'I fear Leeds Station’s £200m transformation boost could repeat a familiar mistake'
I welcome Leeds Station’s £200m boost for its transformation - but I fear we’re heading for more delays
Striking new plans have been given a £200m boost to transform Leeds City Station.
The Budget boost, dubbed the biggest transformation in a generation, will include the construction of a new central overbridge, three new entrances, more space on the concourses and a longer Platform 14 to transform the UK’s third busiest station outside of London.
Three new entrances will strengthen links between the station and the city centre, improving access to the South Bank, the Dark Arches and Princes Square.
The funds announced yesterday will take total investment into the scheme to over £300 million to support regeneration, jobs and commercial opportunities across Leeds.
It is estimated that station’s capacity is set to increase for almost 12 million extra passengers annually by 2043.
The move is certainly welcome for those who use the station each day - but there is a huge white elephant standing in the corner of the room.
Work started on the New Station Street entrance at Leeds station in May 2022 but we’ve been beset with delays for the project which was meant to officially open in September last year.
The opening was first delayed until February 2026, before being pushed to Spring 2026, then again to Summer 2026, September 2026 and then this month.
We’re told it’s because of complex works. So you can forgive readers for being sceptical that these exciting new plans for the station’s remodelling look extremely complex too.
We’ve got form for delayed rail projects. Plans for a station to serve Leeds Bradford Airport were first floated a decade ago and the White Rose station still sits idly waiting to be finished.
While a once in a generation transformation is absolutely needed for the station, we need assurances that we’re not going to be derailed by further delays.
