Local elections 2024: Leeds City Council results as the winners were announced

Voters in Leeds have had their say in the 2024 local council elections.

The polls closed at 10pm last night (Thursday, May 2) and counting got underway at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Middleton this morning.

Voting was for election to Leeds City Council, as well as for the regional Mayor of West Yorkshire.

The Labour group, which controls Leeds City Council, said the vote was the last chance people have to make their voices heard before the next general election.

Today’s counting was for 33 seats being contested at Leeds City Council - one for each ward - and tomorrow (Saturday) will see the count begin for the West Yorkshire Mayor election.

All the results for the city council have now been announced.

First results still to be announced

Though we were told that the first results in the council election were expected to be announced at 12.45pm, no results have so far been incoming.

Still an hour to go

Our reporter at the count has been told that there could be another hour before results start being announced.

The first result of the day has landed and it sees Labour comfortably hold their seat in Little London and Woodhouse.

Javaid Akhtar signs the declaration after becoming the first councillor to be re-elected at today’s election count.

Labour hold Temple Newsam

The second result announced is that of the Temple Newsam ward, where Labour councillor Helen Hayden has held her seat.

Lord Mayor voted out

Coun Adele Rae (Lab) has held her seat in Bramley and Stanningley with a significant margin. She is pictured below with her daughter Lauren

Burmantofts and Richmond Hill

Labour has also comfortably held its seat in Burmantofts and Richmond Hill.

Social Democratic Party gain Middleton Park

The Social Democratic Party have gained the Middleton Park ward with a slim majority over the Labour Party.

Pictured below is their candidate, Rob Chesterfield, after the win.

Labour holds Hunslet and Riverside Ward

The Labour Party the Hunsley and Riverside ward, with Muhammad Iqbal attaining just over 200 more votes than second-placed Green Party.

Lord Mayor loses her seat

In one of the big shocks of the day so far, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Al Garthwaite has lost her seat in the Headingley and Hyde Park ward to Green Party member Tim Goodall.
