Jordan Odu: I'm embracing cosy season in Leeds - here's what's on my festive hit list
In his latest column for the YEP, Jordan Odu talks foodie favourites, new openings and the best festive activities in Leeds
Cosy season is officially in full swing, and my calendar is filling up faster than a pub on payday Friday.
I absolutely love this time of year. Halloween is always fun, quickly followed by Bonfire Night with a local firework display, pie n peas and hot cider in hand.
I used to love the huge Roundhay Park bonfire celebrations and despite calls for its return, the council has spoken and, sadly, it won’t be coming back. But there’s loads more exciting stuff happening in our wonderful city to get on board with.

First up, Love, Jackie is a fun new bar bringing a bit of Irish mischief to Merrion Street and about to become your work Christmas night out go-to. It promises Guinness, gaming and good craic - what’s not to love?
On the food front, I’ve made two banging discoveries recently. First, Khoi Vietnamese restaurant in Chapel Allerton. Not brand new, but new to me, and what a find. The pho is the ultimate cold-evening comfort food, and it’s really great value too.
Second, Sunday lunch at Cheesy Living Co. Picture a delicious roast with a side of fondue. It’s the duo you didn’t know you needed, and trust me, you need it.

Also on my radar is Fern Modern Sushi 2, which opens very soon on Park Row. Expect more of the same amazing sushi and Japanese delights as her original spot in the Central Arcade, and if you haven’t tried there, then take this as your sign to get booked in. You can thank me later.
There’s been a few highs and lows on the retail front in Leeds. The sad news first: Harvey Nichols is closing after 30 years in the city.
The fourth-floor brasserie has long been one of my go-to lunch spots, and I still remember using the iconic shopping bag for my school PE kit, thinking I was the coolest kid around! Still, I’m curious to see what Flannels does with the space.
Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom. Leeds independent fashion institution Hip may have closed earlier this year, but its founder Everton Campbell has opened a fresh new store called 2nd Academic in Thornton’s Arcade. It’s a full circle moment for Everton as this is where Hip first opened 30 years ago. I can’t wait to check it out.

Last month I touched on Christmas, but Queen Mariah has spoken and it’s TIIIIIIMMMMEEEE to get properly stuck in! This is one of my busiest times of the year, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Leeds Christmas Market is back with a brand-new direction, two new bars taking you to the highlands and Alps with live entertainment and plenty of Yorkshire indie food faves to enjoy. I’m really excited to see it all come to life.
Away from the party, one of the things that gives me all the festive feels is a visit to theatre. I go to panto every year at City Varieties, and this year it’s Rapunzel, so I’ll be letting my hair down and getting involved in all the fun.

For the culture vultures, the Grand Theatre’s latest line-up is looking good, as always, with Mrs Doubtfire and Home Alone in Concert at the top of my list. Over at Leeds Playhouse, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical is another one to add to the festive calendar.
And for a magical family day out, Northern Lights at Temple Newsam is back this month and looks seriously sparkly. Every year, the city takes its festive celebrations up a notch, and this year is certainly no different, with plenty of magical experiences to get everyone involved in.
So, wrap up warm, book those tables early, and make the most of it. I’ll see you out there!
