These are the faces of nine criminals who were issued with life sentences for their crimes at Leeds Crown Court in the last year.

The horrific cases include an abusive husband who murdered his wife with a hammer before fleeing to Scotland and a dangerous sex predator who laughed at his victim and told her he had HIV after abducting her in Leeds city centre.

There was also a “cruel” father sentenced for murdering his son after being found guilty more than two decades years after the fatal attack and a Wakefield man who was jailed for strangling his victim to death before impersonating her on Facebook.

A mother and her partner were both jailed for life at Leeds Crown Court with a minimum term of 39 years for murdering her son during a campaign of "horrific and prolonged torture". Sebastian Kalinowski died of an infection caused by "untreated complications of multiple rib fractures", after weeks of what prosecutors described as "cruel assaults and abuse" at the hands of his mother Agnieszka Kalinowska and her long-term partner Andrzej Latoszewski at their home in Huddersfield.

A murderer who took 'perverted pleasure' as he drove over a man as he lay injured lost his appeal to have his life sentenced reduced in January. Mohammed Fike Butt will remain locked up for at least 28 years after Court of Appeal judges rejected claims that the minimum sentence was too long. Butt, 33, was handed a life sentence at Leeds Crown Court in 2021 for murdering Jason Llanwarne and injuring two men by driving at them in his car in Headingley.
