7. Yeadon in the early 2000s
Yeadon Tarn, known for many years locally as Yeadon Dam, a natural depression where surface water collects to form a lake. The surrounding land has been developed as a park offering many recreational activities eg. fishing and sailing. The sailing club was founded here in 1928 and is situated across the water in the background, along with the Tarn Activity Centre and childrens playground. Pictured in October 2003. Yeadon Town Hall located in the cobbled Town Hall Square pictured in October 2003. Leeds architect, William Hill was the winner of a competition to design the Town Hall and he was one of thirty entrants. He chose a gothic style and the building was completed and opened on June 26, 1880. Over the years the Town Hall has had many uses - The Mutual Improvement Society, the Mechanics Institution an elementary school, a venue for a gentleman's club, a cinema, a library and a clinic Photo: Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net

This stone marks the site of Yeadon Fountain and was put up in 1977 by Aireborough Civic Society and unveiled by Councillor Graham Kirkland, Lord Mayor of Leeds. Photographs exist of the bronze and marble fountain with iron drinking cup which was made to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The Brown family of Kirk Lane Mills provided 300 trees to line this stretch of the Dudley Hill - Killinghall main road which was renamed Victoria Avenue. The opening ceremony took place in 1898 and included a lunch in the Town Hall with a celebration concert and dance in the evening. Photo: Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net
