Norristhorpe couple secure future of popular Leeds marina

Aire Valley Marina's future has been secured following its acquisition by a Norristhorpe-based husband-and-wife team, after the retirement of its long-standing owner.

Declan and Lucy Colleran, both 29, have bought the largest inland marina in central Leeds, complete with more than 1,000ft of mooring.

The couple said the acquisition marks a major milestone for their family business and reassured current residents that preserving the marina’s “easy-going, relaxed atmosphere” will remain a key priority.

“The marina is a special place, and you can really see how much the residents love being here,” said Declan.

“Some of my favourite memories are of boating with Lucy and our two young children,” said the entrepreneur, who holds a skipper’s licence.

“We keep our own leisure boat in York and also enjoy boating holidays abroad. It’s a big part of our lifestyle, so the opportunity to acquire Aire Valley Marina seemed a perfect fit. It’s a fantastic location – just a 30-minute walk along the towpath into Leeds – and surrounded by parks and a golf course.”

Aire Valley Marina now forms part of Colleran Investments Ltd – a wider investment portfolio operated by Declan and Lucy alongside DC Environmental and Aquatic Restorations.

DC Environmental, a vegetation and civils contracting company, and Aquatic Restorations – a specialist marine contractor delivering dredging, invasive weed removal and workboat hire services – provide the foundation of the couple’s experience in the waterways sector.

“These businesses are supported by our fantastic team of highly skilled operatives with extensive experience in marina operations, canal and river maintenance and marine civil engineering projects across the region,” explained Declan.

“The marina sits on the Leeds Liverpool Canal – the longest in the UK. Through our other companies, we’ve gained extensive experience working across this waterway with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental management.

"We’re bringing that same approach to the marina – protecting what’s already there, while introducing improvements that will enable current and future residents and visitors to enjoy and experience the enhanced space.”

Planned upgrades over the next few years will focus on investment in the marina’s grounds and facilities – including improvements to restrooms, moorings and other areas on site.

“It is one of the only residential marinas in the area, which sets it apart from the others,” said Lucy who, alongside Declan, is now among the youngest marina owners in the UK.

“The strong sense of community this brings is clear to see. We want to preserve the easy-going, relaxed atmosphere and ensure it continues to be a great place to live and be.”

Aire Valley Marina is close to shops, restaurants, pubs and the Cardigan Fields Leisure Park, with a dedicated car park and space to accommodate a variety of boats.

“The marina offers the best of both worlds: A peaceful setting on the water, surrounded by green spaces, with Central Leeds within walking distance,” added Lucy.

“As the previous owners enjoy retirement, Declan and I look forward to building on the marina’s strong foundations and continuing to develop one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems.”
