Time for an anecdote: moving back to the United Kingdom from New Zealand, we had a decision to make - do we move to somewhere like Manchester or London, or given that my family are all (West) Yorkshire born and bred, do my family and I move to West Yorkshire.
10 years and counting in Leeds, and it’s the best decision we’ve made. Though that might be family bias talking there.
But when remarking to other people across the world “why” Leeds, I explain to them that it’s the amalgamation of a metropolis at one point, and then just around a 15-minute drive at times, you’re in the countryside - the rolling hills, the quaint villages that dot around the area. It’s part Emmerdale and part Last of the Summer Wine.
And in the winter months, it’s even more magical.
We’ve picked 15 locations around the region, not too far of a trip from Leeds city centre (we’ve included an approximation of miles in our reasoning for each location) and many of which are accessible by train, should the weather hold off enough, and many of which are perfect for sharing/bragging about on Instagram or whatever form of social media you use in this day and age.
So, where would we recommend? Here are our top picks for a winter trip.

13. Holmfirth
Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Pennines, Holmfirth offers the ultimate cosy Yorkshire retreat. Famous as the backdrop for Last of the Summer Wine, its narrow streets and stone cottages possess a timeless charm. After a brisk winter walk around the surrounding hills, settle into one of its traditional pubs or enjoy a warming meal at a riverside café. 🗺️ 25 miles | Bruce Greer

14. Hebden Bridge
Known for its bohemian spirit and vibrant independent scene, Hebden Bridge is a perfect spot for alternative shopping and people-watching. The town is built into a steep valley, offering dramatic views of the surrounding moorland, while the tranquil Rochdale Canal runs right through its heart. Browse the eclectic shops before finding a warm retreat in a canal-side coffee house. 🗺️ 26 miles | Submitted
15. Skipton
The "Gateway to the Dales" is defined by its magnificent, well-preserved medieval castle, standing guard over the bustling market town. Skipton’s high street is lined with historic buildings, and its famous market still operates. Take a short walk along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal or explore the castle grounds before retiring to a cosy pub fire. 🗺️ 28 miles | Submitted Photo: Submitted
