Time for an anecdote: moving back to the United Kingdom from New Zealand, we had a decision to make - do we move to somewhere like Manchester or London, or given that my family are all (West) Yorkshire born and bred, do my family and I move to West Yorkshire.
10 years and counting in Leeds, and it’s the best decision we’ve made. Though that might be family bias talking there.
But when remarking to other people across the world “why” Leeds, I explain to them that it’s the amalgamation of a metropolis at one point, and then just around a 15-minute drive at times, you’re in the countryside - the rolling hills, the quaint villages that dot around the area. It’s part Emmerdale and part Last of the Summer Wine.
And in the winter months, it’s even more magical.
We’ve picked 15 locations around the region, not too far of a trip from Leeds city centre (we’ve included an approximation of miles in our reasoning for each location) and many of which are accessible by train, should the weather hold off enough, and many of which are perfect for sharing/bragging about on Instagram or whatever form of social media you use in this day and age.
So, where would we recommend? Here are our top picks for a winter trip.
7. Ilkley
A refined Victorian spa town that feels slightly more metropolitan than its neighbors, Ilkley sits at the foot of the iconic Ilkley Moor. It is famed for its high-quality independent shops, excellent food scene, and the historic Bettys Café Tea Rooms. A perfect trip involves a bracing climb on the moor followed by luxury comfort food. 🗺️ 17 miles | JPIMedia Resell

8. Keighley
Though a former industrial powerhouse, Keighley retains a robust sense of history and offers unique attractions, including its links to the Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway. In winter, catching a ride on one of the heritage steam trains provides a magical, atmospheric journey through the valleys and Moors to Haworth. Its central market is also great for winter provisions. 🗺️ 17 miles | Tom Marshall / Keighley and Worth Valley Railway

9. Knaresborough
Admittedly in North Yorkshire, Knaresborough is worth the visit for its stunning scenery, perched high above the River Nidd gorge. In winter, the scenery is dramatic, especially the view of the railway viaduct and the legendary Mother Shipton’s Cave. Take a bracing walk along the river to appreciate the unique geological landscape. 🗺️ 18 miles | Melanie Clare

10. Haworth
Walk the famous cobbled main street that seems lifted straight from a Victorian novel. Haworth is inextricably linked to the Brontë sisters, and in winter, the surrounding dramatic moorland takes on an atmospheric, almost gothic beauty. Visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum, then warm up in one of the many historic tea rooms or independent shops. 🗺️ 20 miles | Bruce Rollinson Photo: Bruce Rollinson

11. Slaithwaite
Pronounced 'Slaw-it,' this canal-side village is known for its creative industries and independent shops, having undergone a recent renaissance. The atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxed, with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal running right through its heart. It’s a wonderful spot to browse artisan shops and enjoy the thriving food and drink scene. 🗺️ 23 miles | Submitted

12. Marsden
A picturesque village often called the gateway to the Peak District, Marsden is defined by its dramatic moorland scenery and its historic connection to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. It’s an ideal base for a refreshing winter hike around the nearby reservoirs or through the rugged landscape, followed by a well-earned pint at a traditional pub in the village centre. 🗺️ 24 miles | National World
