Brave Leeds residents challenged to walk on 1,200°F hot coals for local charities

Brave participants are being challenged to walk barefoot across glowing embers reaching up to 1,200°F outside Leeds Art Gallery as Leeds Mind and Basis Yorkshire team up for a high-energy fundraising challenge

Brave Leeds residents are preparing to step out of their comfort zones -and onto glowing hot coals reaching temperatures of up to 1,200°F - outside Leeds Art Gallery this November.

The Leeds Mind Firewalk returns to Victoria Gardens on November 4, partnering for the first time with fellow local charity Basis Yorkshire.

The red-hot challenge builds on last year's inaugural event, which saw nearly 30 participants brave the heat to raise over £4,000 for local mental health services.

To help everyone prepare, the evening begins with expert mental coaching and safety training led by Scott Bell, founder of UK Firewalk and two-time Guinness World Record holder for the furthest distance walked on hot coals.

Walking for Vital Local Services

Marie-Louise Robinson, Corporate and Events Fundraiser for Leeds Mind, said: “Taking part in a firewalk is about much more than walking across hot coals. It's an opportunity to challenge yourself, build confidence and achieve something you may never have thought possible.

“Every step also helps us continue providing mental health support to people across Leeds and West Yorkshire.”

Phoebe Cunningham, Fundraising and Communications Coordinator for Basis Yorkshire, added: “We are excited to be invited by Leeds Mind to join them for our very first firewalk.

“The event will rely on trust, just like how the people we support trust us.”

Sponsorship money raised by walkers will be split according to participant choice between the two organisations:

  • Leeds Mind: Supported over 8,700 people experiencing mental health difficulties across West Yorkshire over the past year.
  • Basis Yorkshire: Provides essential safety, emotional, and practical support for sex workers and individuals who have experienced sexual exploitation or abuse.

Registration is open now, but spots are limited and sign-ups close promptly at 12pm on November 3.

To secure your place on the embers and choose which charity you want to support, head straight to the official registration pages at Leeds Mind or Basis Yorkshire.
