Lord Mayor to host Leeds launch for inaugural UK Jewish Culture Month
Leeds takes centre stage in a landmark national celebration this spring as the Lord Mayor, Councillor Dan Cohen, hosts a special civic event to mark the UK’s first-ever Jewish Culture Month.
Taking place at the historic Leeds Civic Hall on Monday, May 18th, the launch will kick off a month-long showcase of the richness and diversity of British Jewish life, running from May 16th to June 16th, 2026.
Designed to be enjoyed by people of all faiths and backgrounds, the programme highlights Jewish contributions to everything from music and literature to the ‘fabric of the city’ through architecture, fashion, and food.

In Leeds, the celebration carries extra weight as it aligns with Leeds 400; the city-wide program marking four centuries since Leeds was granted its first town charter.
The launch event, held in the Banquet Hall at 5pm, will focus specifically on how the Jewish community has shaped the cultural and civic identity of Leeds, both historically and in the modern day.
Attendees will have the chance to explore the Jewish Living Experience (JLE) exhibition, alongside artefacts from the Jewish Leeds History Project that document the community's pivotal role in the city's 400-year story.
“Jewish Culture Month is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich contribution that the Jewish community has made to the life of Leeds over many generations,” said Lord Mayor Councillor Dan Cohen.
“From culture and creativity to enterprise and civic life, Jewish residents have played an important role in shaping our city. I am delighted that Leeds will be marking this new national initiative.”
The initiative has garnered high-level support, with Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, noting: “I’m really pleased to support the first UK Jewish Culture Month and look forward to its success among people of all faiths and communities.”
Organised by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the month promises to be a vibrant addition to the city’s 2026 cultural calendar.
UK Jewish Culture Month runs from May 16 to June 16, with the official Leeds civic launch taking place at the Civic Hall on May 18 at 5pm.
