Days Out: Whitby Regatta, East Coast

As days out go, they don't get much more fun than Whitby Regatta.

Held from August 19 to 22, this 176-year-old event sees the pretty North Yorkshire coastal town come alive for a full weekend of competitions, entertainment, and all round good fun.

There’s everything from professional rowing races, a fun run and beach volleyball, to a charity raft race, glamorous granny competition and military vehicle displays. There’s even a craft fair and market, motorcycle gymkhana and a spectacular fireworks display on the Monday evening.

This year also marks the return of the infamous (and hilarious) greasy pole competition, which sees competitors slide their way along a greased-up pole extended out over Whitby harbour to pick up a flag – the winner is the first person who grabs the flag from the pole and returns to the fish pier with it in their hand.

With its winding cobbled streets and independent shops, to the huge, sweeping beach and abundance of fish and chip shops, Whitby makes for a fantastic seaside destination whatever time of the year.

Why not try climbing the famous 199 steps to the ruins of Whitby Abbey.

For the perfect end to the day, treat yourself to some of the freshest fish and chips in the country. It’s definitely worth considering the famous Magpie Café, Trenchers, or Quayside. And for something a little different, try Fortune’s Kippers, who have been smoking their delicious kippers on their premises on Henrietta Street for more than 137 years.
