Days out in Yorkshire: Rockt Climbing Centre, Brighouse

EVER craned your neck to look up at those daredevils scaling walls and clambering from hold to hold and thought, 'I could never do that?'

Think again, because ROKT climbing centre in Brighouse has made a national name for itself when it comes to fun, accessible climbing.

Make no mistake, there’s sections of this sprawling centre – located inside an old flour mill – that are for the global elite (one of their climbers is in Team GB’s bouldering squad).

But the essence of the centre is all about giving everyone the tools and chance to climb as high and as far as they want.

Their oldest climber is currently 102 and the youngest is three, so there’s something for everyone.

After an official induction, top rope climbing with supervisor Chris is a good start. With a head for heights and harness, you can climb around 21m high – to the point where the people on the floor look like ants.

The bouldering (climbing without ropes) is a must as ROKT is home to Europe’s first ROKTAGON bouldering penthouse – a series of hexagonal structures to navigate. The slab room and circuit rooms also offer more bouldering from basic to elite.

Kids are well catered for with a ball pit, climbing wall and climbing igloo.

The centre also has a canal-side pub, The Millers Bar, that serves homemade food, craft ales and features its own outdoor ROKTAGON climbing structure for kids.

With prices from £4 each, it’s a cheap, memorable day out you thought you’d never have.
