Historic Leeds cinema to host classic Laurel and Hardy comedy night
Headingley's historic Cottage Road Cinema is welcoming the uncrowned kings of comedy back to the big screen this November for a special evening of classic slapstick and live organ accompaniment
Headingley’s historic Cottage Road Cinema is set to host a dedicated showcase celebrating silver screen icons Laurel and Hardy to help local film lovers beat the post-budget blues.
The special programme of classic films takes place on November 21 at 7.30pm, with the evening featuring the 1936 feature film Our Relations as the main event, where the comedy duo play both themselves and their twin brothers.
The supporting programme opens with the 1929 silent short Big Business, featuring the pair trying to sell Christmas trees in the middle of summer to their classic foil James Finlayson.
The silent feature will receive live organ accompaniment from organist and Laurel & Hardy aficionado Ben Hinchliffe, with short films Another Fine Mess and Helpmates completing the opening half of the showcase.
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy made 73 short films and 26 feature films between 1926 and 1952, standing as one of cinema's most enduring comedy partnerships.
The selection screened at Cottage Road highlights their peak creative era between 1928 and 1940.
Members of the official Laurel & Hardy fan club - known as 'tents' - have been invited from across the region and are expected to attend in full attire.
Charles Morris, proprietor of Cottage Road Cinema, said: “Members of the Laurel & Hardy 'tents', as the fan club is known, have been invited from far and wide and are expected to be dressed up in all their regalia.
“We hope a large crowd will join us to laugh in unison at the antics of these two clowns. Heaven knows, we need something to laugh about at the moment.”
Tickets for Laurel & Hardy at Cottage Road Cinema cost £9 and are available to book now via Cottage Road Cinema’s website.
