Newman suffered a hamstring injury early in Tom Briscoe’s testimonial game against Hull last weekend.

The 21-year-old centre, a member of England’s elite performance squad, had earlier set up Rhinos’ opening try in their 38-6 win with a scintillating break and offload to captain Kruise Leeming.

After feeling discomfort in the hamstring he was immediately replaced and confirmed he is a doubt for the visit of Warrington Wolves in Betfred Super League round one, which is in 10 days’ time.

“I have got a slight hamstring strain,” reported Newman, who returned last summer from a broken leg suffered in 2020.

“I will be touch and go for round one, but we’ll take it day by day and see where I’m at.”

Losing Newman for the opening game would be a blow, but Rhinos have strength in depth in the centres and Liam Sutcliffe, who missed the final nine games of last year because of a knee injury, has come through two comeback matches unscathed. Briscoe has switched from wing to become a regular centre and reigning Yorkshire Evening Post Shooting Star Jack Broadbent is another potential option.

Rhinos will be without forwards Tom Holroyd (ankle) and Sam Walters (shoulder) for the start of the season after they were hurt in warm-up games last month, but the rest of the squad are fit.

Coach Richard Agar is now back at the helm after missing last weekend’s match following a positive lateral flow test.
