Leeds Rhinos’ unbeaten record in Women’s Super League ended when they were beaten 12-6 at St Helens tonight.

Both sides scored one converted try, but three penalty goals made the difference 15 days before the sides meet at Wembley in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup final. Rhinos coach Lois Forsell admitted the defeat was “frustrating”.

"We defended well for long periods, but we weren’t clinical enough,” she said. Rhinos dominated the opening 20 minutes and got over the line twice without being able to get the ball down, but found themselves 10 points down at the break to a try, conversion and two penalty goals by Faye Gaskin.

Leeds were on top for much of the second half. Keara Bennett nipped over from acting-half after 56 minutes and added the extras with a kick which went over after hitting both posts, but Saints’ defence held out and another Gaskin penalty goal sealed their win.

Rhinos were without full-back Ruby Enright (foot) and loose-forward Bethan Dainton (shoulder) from their semi-final side, but Forsell is confident they and ex-Saints forward Shona Hoyle (fractured finger) will be available for Wembley. Number nine Jasmine Cudjoe (broken arm) and forward Kaiya Glynn (leg) remain on the casualty list.
