Leeds Rhinos: Galloway recovers after nasty arm injury

Leeds Rhinos' Keith Galloway hopes to be fit in time for Friday's game against Salford Red Devils despite losing all feeling in his arm last week.

The Australian prop was sidelined after just five seconds against Catalans Dragons when the Super League fixture’s opening tackle went wrong.

Galloway lined up fellow countryman Willie Mason, Catalans’ giant enforcer, but suffered a “stinger” in his shoulder and had to depart Headingley’s pitch after lengthy treatment.

He recalled: “I’ve tackled him a few times before and he is a big man.

“But I think it was actually a bit of friendly fire that did me.

“I’ve not looked at the video but I think the head of one of our players banged into my neck and jarred it all.

“I was a bit worried there on Friday as it was a bad stinger.

“Everything went numb and I didn’t have any feeling; I’ve had stingers before but never like that.

“It’s progressed pretty well since, though, and I’m doing everything right to hopefully be right for Salford.”

The struggling champions will hope he is passed fit given the player, who turned 31 on Monday, has been finding some of his best form following his winter move from NRL outfit Wests Tigers.

Galloway added: “I’ve been playing a few more minutes but I’m probably feeling a bit more confident now that I know the team better.

“It’s taken longer than I’d have liked to adjust to the game over here but hopefully I can kick on now.”

Salford, despite being hit with a six-point deduction for breaking salary cap rules, have won three of their last five games under Ian Watson as they cling on to their hopes of breaking back into the top eight.

“Earlier in the year they were playing awesome,” admitted Galloway.

“They beat us at their place and they are a good side with some quality players in that team.

“They turn up hard but we’ve been training really hard ourselves.

“The intensity was up last week ahead of the Catalans game and you could see how much effort went into that game.

“We didn’t get the win but compared to previous weeks it was a lot better and hopefully we’ll get that victory on Friday.”

And, of course, the ex-New South Wales State of Origin front-row will look to get far more game-time in, too.

“It’s always frustrating watching from the sidelines but especially with the way we’ve been going,” added Galloway, as Leeds seek to avoid an eight successive defeat.

“Essentially we were down to 16 men against Catalans and I just had to watch on.

“It’s hard enough with 17. But I saw the effort going in and, thankfully, the injury isn’t too serious so hopefully I can get straight back out there this week.”

Salford won 14-10 in April when Galloway, the former Cronulla Sharks star, scored his only try in 17 Leeds appearances so far.
