From Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ return to Leeds Rhinos records: 5 things to watch out for at Magic Weekend

Magic Weekend is here and it’s set to be bigger than ever.

All 12 English Betfred Super League clubs will be in action at Everton FC’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday and Sunday as the event celebrates its 19th birthday. Including the French derby between Catalans Dragons and Toulouse Olympique, which is being played at Stade Pierre-Fabre in Castres, more than 80,000 tickets have been sold across the two days and all seven games will be shown live on Sky Sports’ main channels. Here’s five things to watch out for during a packed weekend of rugby league.

1: Try celebrations.

League sponsors Betfred will donate £180 to the Motor Neurone Disease Association for every try celebration across the seven fixtures. There will be a bonus £1,000 for the weekend’s best. A similar initiative at last year’s Magic, in Newcastle, raised £10,000 for the charity. A total of 41 tries were scored and the resulting £7,380 pot was rounded up by Betfred to £10,000.

2: Odd boots.

No, they haven’t got changed in the dark. Players sponsored by kit supplier Oxen will be wearing odd coloured boots at Magic Weekend. The company says that will bring “some extra colour, noise and talkability to a massive weekend of rugby league”.

3: Rhinos star chases record

If he scores for Leeds Rhinos against Bradford Bulls on Sunday, winger Maika Sivo will set a new club record for tries in successive Super League games. Sivo equalled Paul Sterling’s feat of touching down in nine consecutive matches, achieved 29 years ago, when Rhinos beat Hull KR last week. However, Bulls are one of only two sides Sivo has failed to score against this year, the other being Hull FC. If Leeds win, it will be their sixth straight victory and best run under coach Brad Arthur.

4: Wildcats return.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats will be back for one game only on Sunday. The club were known by that name from their debut Super League season in 1999 until 2016 when they reverted to being Wakefield Trinity. They will wear a retro Wildcats kit for the derby with Castleford Tigers which opens day two.

5: Crowd record.

More tickets have been sold for this Magic Weekend than any other. The single day record attendance of 40,871 - set at Newcastle in 2015 - is set to be broken on Sunday when Wildcats play Tigers, Rhinos face Bulls and the Wigan Warriors versus St Helens derby rounds things off.
