Trailing 22-4 early in the second half, National Conference League Division One side Lions showed great spirit by hitting back to cut the gap to six points but Premier Division Lane finished the stronger side.

Danny Rowse’s 70th-minute penalty gave the Castleford team an eight-point cushion and they put the game beyond Lions’ reach when Nathan Fozzard scored his second try and Rowse added his fifth goal.

Ricky Williams gave Lions a great start with a fifth-minute try but Lane then took control with touchdowns from Fozzard, Lewis Price and Danny Lidbury.

Mikey Hayward’s 43rd-minute score increased Lane’s lead but Lions hauled themselves back with two tries in four minutes from Williams and Ian Jackson who kicked his second goal.

But Lions finished second best in the closing stages against a Lane side for whom captain Chris Siddons set a great lead in the pack and won the man of the match award.
