Ex-Leeds Rhinos & Castleford Tigers man to captain USA alongside former Salford Red Devils and WWE star

A former Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers player will captain the USA in two historic showdowns with South Africa this week.

Peter Lupton, 42, was at loose-forward for Rhinos under-19s when they beat Bradford Bulls in an academy Grand Final 22 years ago. He didn’t make a first team appearance for Leeds, but played 52 games with Castleford from 2006-2008 and also featured for London Broncos, Hull FC and Celtic Crusaders in Super League.

The former Wales international moved to America in 2016 and plays for the Boston 13s club. The USA’s squad also includes Daniel Vidot, who played six Super League games for Salford Red Devils in 2016 and has NRL experience with Canberra Raiders, St George-Illawarra Dragons, Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans.

The winger was capped 10 times by Samoa and plays in America with DC Cavalry. Under the name Xyon Quinn, he had a spell as a WWE wrestler and is now signed to rival company TNA. Another former Salford man, Sean Rutgerson, is coach of the USA side who face South Africa at Centurion Rugby Club on Wednesday, with a rematch three days later at the Grizzlies Rugby Club, both in Pretoria.
