Castleford Tigers looking to improve for Wigan Warriors test

Castleford Tigers' season got off to a flying start, but long-serving forward Grant Millington has warned they must get better.

Millington was among the try scorers in Tigers’ 28-10 win over Toronto Wolfpack in Betfred Super League round one.

Newly-promoted Toronto went ahead early on and it took Tigers a while to get into the contest, which is something Millington said they will work on for Friday’s visit of Wigan Warriors.

“We probably started a little bit erratic,” the Aussie front-rower admitted.

“The first game of the season, you always do come in with some nervous energy and there was a fair bit of hype around that game too.

"But once we found our rhythm, we executed our gameplan and did a lot of little things right.

"That was reflected on the scoreboard.

“The middle part of the game was probably our best.

"It got scrappy towards the end which was disappointing, but there’s always room for improvement and we’ll look to make that against Wigan.”

Warriors beat Warrington Wolves last Thursday and Millington isn’t predicting any surprises from the visitors.

He added: “You always expect the same from Wigan, they are tough in defence and always move the ball very well.

"They set the benchmark for teams that execute their gameplan.

"Your whole game has to be on against them as if you switch off in the slightest they will punish you.”

Millington, 33, has given coach Daryl Powell something to ponder this week, having played out of position in the second-row against Wolfpack after George Griffin suffered a head injury.

“Before I came over here I was an out-and-out back-row,” Millington - who made his Castleford debut in 2012 said.

“It’s only since I’ve been at Cas that I’ve gradually ended up at front-row.

"There were a few of us who had hamstring niggles coming into Sunday’s game.

"I was initially going to play back-row, but the thought was I’d have to run a bit faster and they were trying to save my hamstring.

"They put Griff in there, but we lost him so I ended up going there anyway - and my hammy came through great.”
