Leeds Rhinos news: new deal for rookie Fergus McCormack

Rookie Fergus McCormack has pledged his future to Leeds Rhinos

Rookie full-back Fergus McCormack has vowed to “make the most of every opportunity” after signing a new long-term contract with Leeds Rhinos.

The deal will keep McCormack at Rhinos until the end of 2029. The 20-year-old full-back, who had 12 months remaining on his previous terms, broke into the first team this year and scored one try in five appearances.

A former junior with Guiseley Rangers and Dudley Hill, he progressed through Rhinos’ youth system and was named the cub’s best young talent in 2026, having been academy player of the year two years earlier. McCormack, who began his career as a half-back, said: “I’m really pleased to have signed a new deal and commit my future to Leeds Rhinos.

“This club has been a huge part of my journey so far and I’m grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve had since joining the scholarship. Making my senior debut and getting the chance to play in the first team has been a big moment for me. I know there is still plenty of hard work ahead and I’m determined to keep improving, learn from the experienced players around me and make the most of every opportunity.”

He went on: “Leeds is where I want to be. Playing at AMT Headingley in front of our supporters is something special and I’m excited about what we can achieve together over the coming years.”

Coach Brad Arthur reckons McCormack has a bright future. He said: “Fergus has shown a great attitude towards his development and has worked hard to put himself in a position to compete for opportunities in the first team.

“He has come through the club’s system, understands what it means to represent Leeds Rhinos and has demonstrated he is prepared to learn and improve. His versatility is another positive and he has shown he can step in and contribute when called upon.

“I think Chev Walker has done a tremendous job with Fergus helping him to transition to the first team while [assistant-coach] Scott Grix and [player] Lachie Miller have helped him settle into the full-back role.

“This extension gives Fergus the opportunity to keep developing in an environment that knows him well. The next step is to continue working hard, build consistency and make the most of the opportunities that come his way.”

McCormack made his first team debut as a substitute in Rhinos’ opening game of the 2026 season, a Challenge Cup win at Widnes Vikings. He started three Super League games midway through the year when Miller was suspended and also featured in the play-off semi-final loss to Warrington Wolves.

Sporting Director Ian Blease added: “Retaining talented young players who have progressed through our own development system is an important part of our long-term strategy. We have seen the progress he has made and it is pleasing to see him beginning to realise his potential at senior level.

“This new deal reflects our belief in Fergus and our desire to give young players a clear pathway into the first team. We look forward to seeing him continue his development in the blue and amber over the coming seasons.”
