Why Nico Elvedi isn't in Leeds United squad vs Sunderland as absence explained

The Swiss international was absent from Leeds United’s matchday squad at the Stadium of Light.

Nico Elvedi will miss Leeds United’s Premier League trip to Sunderland through illness.

Leeds were boosted by the availability of all three Friday afternoon injury concerns on Sunday. Dominic Calvert-Lewin recovered from a foot issue to start while Anton Stach (foot) and Noah Okafor (adductor) were on the bench.

The latter pair were replaced by Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson in the starting-XI. Change number three came at centre-back, with Elvedi absent entirely.

Jaka Bijol replaced the Swiss international at centre-back, with academy prospect Alfie Cresswell taking up the defensive position on the substitute’s bench. Speaking to Sky Sports, Daniel Farke confirmed Elvedi fell ill overnight.

Elvedi has been a regular presence at the heart of defence since initially replacing Bijol against Brighton in September. The summer arrival had started every Premier League game since, settling into life at Leeds impressively.
