Tottenham and Premier League release statements on racial abuse subjected to Leeds United's Jayden Bogle

Statements from Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League on the racial abuse suffered by Leeds United’s Jayden Bogle.

Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League have both released strong statements following the racial abuse subjected to Leeds United’s Jayden Bogle.

Bogle’s boot caught Tottenham forward Mathys Tel on his Achilles midway through the first half of Saturday’s Premier League clash, referee John Brooks awarding a foul but no yellow card.

The incident was then checked by VAR for a possible red card but Bogle avoided any further punishment after a four-minute check.

Tel, meanwhile, who stayed down for treatment, initially attempted to play on but the Spurs attacker was forced off injured a few minutes later.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi then said post-match that Tel had suffered a bad injury that would need a medical check and Leeds United have now revealed that Bogle was subjected to vile racist abuse on social media in the aftermath of Saturday’s game.

The club were able to share screenshots of the messages of abuse - and the Yorkshire Evening Post will not be publishing the comments.

A statement from Tottenham Hotspur read: “We are disgusted to hear that Leeds United’s Jayden Bogle has been subjected to racist abuse on social media following our Premier League fixture at Elland Road on Saturday.

“Racism is abhorrent behaviour for which there is no place in football or society.

“We have offered Leeds United our support in identifying those responsible and we will pursue every available avenue to ensure they are identified and face the full consequences of their actions.

“Regardless of club allegiances and on-pitch results, no-one should ever stand alone in the face of this.”

A statement from the Premier League read: “We join Leeds United in condemning the abhorrent online racist abuse targeted at Jayden Bogle and have offered our full support to Jayden and the club.

“Anybody found guilty of committing discriminatory abuse will face club bans and criminal prosecution. Racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society.”
