Leeds tried to sign striker Adams from the Saints in January last year but saw bids rejected including a third loan to buy option which was understood to involve a substantial loan fee and £20m in the summer if promotion to the Premier League was secured.

United instead loaned RB Leipzig forward and now Nantes striker Jean-Kevin Augustin who endured continued injury problems but United went up anyway as Championship champions and Adams could now play at least some part against the side that tried to sign him.

The 24-year-old striker has netted four times this season but has not scored since the 3-0 win at home to Sheffield United in mid December.

Adams has made 20 league starts this term but only came on as an 85th-minute substitute for top scorer Danny Ings in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea having lost his place in the starting line up following the 3-2 loss at Newcastle United at the start of the month.

"I think he was unlucky over the last few weeks," said Saints boss Hasenhuttl at his pre-match press conference, as quoted by Hampshire Live.

"His performance was far away from where they were at the beginning of the season and we had to work a lot, this is normal that a moment will come when you struggle with freshness.

"It is good now for him to have a rest to recover but I am happy to have him and he will get his chance to play again."
