Whites midfielder Phillips bagged his tenth cap for the Three Lions and his second appearance at a major international tournament in Friday night's Group D encounter against the Tartan Army at Wembley.

Phillips set up the only goal of the game for Raheem Sterling in England s Group D opener against Croatia and the 25-year-old once again lined up in centre midfield along with West Ham's Declan Rice against Scotland.

Phillips again played in a more advanced role as Rice sat deep as part of a midfield axis that also included Chelsea's Mason Mount in the no 10 role behind a front three of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden.

England, though, were unable to make a breakthrough as part of a goalless draw in which Three Lions boss Southgate took of Foden and Kane as Jack Grealish and then Marcus Rashford were brought on from the bench.

The draw prevented England from returning to the top of the group and Tuesday night's clash against the Czech Republic at Wembley will determine whether Southgate's second-placed side go through to the last 16 as group winners, runners-up or have to rely on being one of the four best third-placed sides.

Phillips took to social media on Saturday to say: "Shame we couldn't find the winner but another clean sheet and a point closer to qualification. Thank you as always for your incredible support."
