Mark Jackson provides Joe Gelhardt update after young Leeds United star misses under-23s season finale

Exciting forward Gelhardt joined Leeds from Wigan Athletic last summer and the 18-year-old has excelled in his first season with the under-23s.

The youngster was named on Marcelo Bielsa's first team bench for the first time in February's Premier League hosting of Crystal Palace and another seven appearances amongst the first team substitutes have followed.

Gelhardt, though, has not been seen since featuring on Bielsa's bench for last month's 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool and the teenager was missing from United's under-23s squad for Monday's Premier League Two Division Two season finale at home to Burnley.

The teenager was approaching the final weekend of the PL2 season as his side's top scorer on 11 goals, one ahead of team mate and close friend Sam Greenwood on ten.

Greenwood then jumped above his close pal in the final game by netting a brace of penalties in a 5-2 victory which saw Jackson's title winners finish the whole season unbeaten at home.

Gelhardt's displays have been key, whilst also impressing Bielsa, and Jackson says the England under-18s international has a "niggle" and will not be out for long.

"He's all right. He's okay," Jackson told the YEP.

"He was extremely gutted to miss the game, like any player but he's working hard with the physio staff and he won't be long.

"It's nothing serious and he'll be back shortly.

"He just picked up an injury in training.

"It's nothing serious or anything like that.

"We have got a great medical team here so I am sure he will be back in no time."
