Sunderland boss shares honest thoughts on Leeds United after 'intense' draw
Leeds United and Sunderland played out a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris was happy with his side’s intensity and togetherness against a Leeds United team who have enjoyed a good start to the season.
The Black Cats and Leeds played out a rather forgetful 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. Hampered by intense winds, neither side was able to dominate for large spells or create a string of clear-cut chances.
Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League even with the added point but were much-improved from the previous weekend’s defeat at Bournemouth. During the week, Le Bris called for an improvement in intensity from his side and believes he got it.
“Yeah, tight game, intense,” Le Bris said. “Again, it's a good team. They’ve built momentum at the beginning of this Premier League. We struggle. We are struggling a little bit.
“So the most important thing was to be Sunderland. I think we showed intensity, togetherness, and consistency. We avoided those unforced errors we committed, probably the last games.
“It was important to be really disciplined, consistent, and waiting for the opportunity. So this is great, and after that, the weather wasn't easy to manage. But we showed on the ball some great things, created small chances, but it wasn't enough to win it.”
A major issue for Sunderland this season has been defensive errors but despite a couple of shaky moments, they handed Leeds little. Luke O’Nien and Nordi Mukiele defended well for large parts, with an admittedly toothless Whites side kept at arm’s length.
“At Bournemouth, it was just a question of cheap mistakes,” Le Bris added. “So we didn't commit any this game. I think it's important in the Premier League to not give gifts to the opponent because it's so hard to win games.
“Today was okay. So it happens, but you have to learn quickly. At least against Lech Poznan, and now against a good team in Leeds, we showed more consistency.”
