Leeds United compared to La Liga giants after record breaking moment

Leeds United have drawn some lofty comparisons following their draw at Premier League rivals Sunderland.

Leeds United have been discussed as a direct side that takes advantage of set-pieces during their recent upturn in form - but the Whites showed they are more than capable of playing an attractive style of football in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Premier League rivals Sunderland.

Daniel Farke’s side were dealt a double blow during the first half of their visit to the Stadium of Light as key defender Joe Rodon hobbled out of the action with an injury just moments after the hosts had taken the lead with a well-taken goal from former Brighton and Hove Albion winger Simon Adingra. However, the Whites responded positively after some frank discussions throughout half-time and quickly got themselves on the front foot after the restart.

Their reward came in spectacular fashion as a stunning passing move containing every member of the Whites side ended with Dominic Calvert-Lewin writing himself into the record books by becoming the first Leeds player to score in six consecutive Premier League fixtures. The former Everton frontman was able to get across a Black Cats defender and met a cross from the right-hand side before sending a sumptuous flick beyond hosts keeper Robin Roefs and inside his far post.

The slick and incisive passing move that led to Calvert-Lewin’s drew praise from former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender Micah Richards as he made an unlikely comparison between the Whites and one of world football’s greatest clubs.

With the latest episode of The Rest is Football podcast drawing to a close, Richards said: “We are not going away without talking about Leeds United, marching on together.” Former Newcastle United and England captain Alan Shearer replied: “What about their goal?” Richards continued: “This is what I am talking about – it was like a prime Barcelona. Tiki-Taka, through the lines, into the space, out wide, into the box and Calvert-Lewin scores. Six in six he has scored.”

Speaking after the draw at the Stadium of Light, Farke said: "That the unbeaten run continued and we showed again a great mentality to come back from a losing position again. Another point in the table, we've improved our situation. No one has come away with a better result here. The performance from minute 30 on, because I think we dominated. Mood wise I'm a bit in between. So all the positives I mentioned right now, but the gut feeling was also like we could have started the game better. I was not really happy with the first 30 minutes.”
