Watford went 2-0 down inside ten minutes during their midweek trip to Elland Road.

Leeds United fans have criticised Tom Cleverley following comments he made after Watford’s 2-1 defeat at Elland Road on Tuesday.

Daniel Farke’s side extended their unbeaten run to six games and climbed to second place in the Championship with another important three points in the bag. Leeds are pushing to challenge those at top of the table for an automatic promotion spot but the competition is heating up.

Watford are currently eighth in the table, six behind the Whites and plenty of time to work on closing that gap. However, it was a tough outing for the Hornets, who found themselves 2-0 down at Elland Road before 10 minutes of football had been played.

Thanks to goals from Largie Ramazani and Brenden Aaronson, Leeds went two ahead with just seven minutes on the clock. Watford found a consolation goal just after half-time courtesy of Kwadwo Baah, but it proved to be nothing more than that in the end.

However, Cleverley believes his side put in a strong performance despite their defeat and said Watford ‘dominated’ for a 55-minute period. Speaking after the match in West Yorkshire, the 35-year-old said: “From minute 15 to 70 we totally dominated the game. Credit to Leeds, even when they're not at the best they know how to win. That's the sign of a top team.

“I thought we showed fantastic personality with the ball. All the things we work on and have done so well were there, we just gave ourselves too much to do after seven minutes.”

Leeds fans have responded to Cleverley’s statement and believe his comments are well wide of the mark. A number of you let us know your thoughts on the Leeds United - YEP Facebook page.

“We sat back after the early goals and substitution, allowing them to play. Cleverley should be asking why their ‘domination’ only produced one shot on target,” one fan wrote.

“He’s correct... they were much better in the pre-match warm ups (40 mins) looked stronger when they lined up before KO (5 mins), then returned to the pitch after half-time well before restart (10 mins). So I agree 55 mins is about right,” another joked.

“Deluded comes to mind. Yes, they had a good 15 min spell after they scored but even in second gear Leeds should have scored at least four,” commented a third.

Cleverley also reflected on the ‘freak mistakes’ made by goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann. The former Manchester United and Everton man described Bachmann as ‘one of the best shot-stoppers in the league’ and defended that he has won Watford ‘a lot more points’ than he’s lost them so far.

Leeds are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Ashton Gate to take on ninth-place Bristol City. In the meantime, they will wait to see how Sunderland, Burnley and Sheffield United get on in their midweek fixtures as the battle for automatic promotion continues.
