Daniel Farke assesses Leeds United no 9 options with extra striker signing stance
Leeds United have just two natural no 9s in Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha.
Daniel Farke has assessed Leeds United’s no 9 options and declared the club’s stance on the possibility of another striker signing before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.
Leeds have made four big signings so far this this summer in new no 1 and record signing James Trafford, winger Harry Wilson, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic and centre-back Nico Elvedi.
The club also poised to announce the arrival of new back-up keeper Michael Zetterer from Eintracht Frankfurt as Lucas Perri departs for Torino.
As well goalkeepers Karl Darlow and Ilan Meslier, centre-back Pascal Struijk and forward Joel Piroe have been the big departures, Piroe’s move to West Ham leaving Leeds with just two natural centre forwards in Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha.
Farke, though, says it is usually the case that clubs who play with just one striker would only carry two physical strikers in their squad whilst declaring that United would never say no if the right quality option became available and also within budget.
Running through the other striker options in the current squad, the Whites boss picked out Willy Gnonto and Noah Okafor as two players who could play upfront, albeit in a different role to Calvert-Lewin and Nmecha.
Speaking at Friday afternoon’s pre-Brentford press conference, the YEP asked Farke if anyone else from the current squad could play as a no 9 or if it was an area that definitely needed strengthening this summer.
Giving a detailed response, Farke said: “We have with Dominic and Lukas two players where their profile is pretty, pretty similar and very, very pleased with this.
"We have of course players who can also play striker and have played striker in their career before, of course slightly different.
"Willy Gnonto for example is not like a physical striker who wins each and every header, he's a bit more like a false 9 or Noah Okafor can also play a little bit different.
"But in terms of a physical target player it's more or less we have Dominic and Lukas and happy with this.
“This is more or less what you spot in many, many squads”
"Yes, you can also wish for more and more options.
"On the other hand, you have to keep in mind that again also we work with a limited budget anyhow and just to bring some legs in makes no sense. Has to be quality.
"But we are also not scared to pay one in case we need it and if we really honest and speak also about the teams who played in Europe and have to play even more games and you have a look at their squads, very really do you find a team who has more than really two physical central striker options if you just play with one striker.
"Bayern Munich they have Harry Kane. That's it more or less and this is more or less what you spot in many, many squads so have only two physical strikers, also players who can play this position.
"Yes, if there is also a solution more or less to bring someone in who is perhaps also slightly different in this position we would never say in general no because we are always looking for some options.
"But that's also very difficult, because just a name or just a number, makes no sense, it has to be quality and has to be also competition."
