Historic European club Leeds United bought star attacker from folds after 123-year existence
The sad ending of an historic European club Leeds United bought a star attacker from.
A famous European side that Leeds United bought a star attacker from has ceased operations after its 123-year existence.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink joined Leeds from Portuguese side Boavista for £2m back in the summer of 1997, Hasselbaink going on to score 42 goals in just 87 appearances for the Whites in two seasons with the club.
Boavista won Portugal’s Primeira Liga for the only time in their history in 2001 but huge financial problems followed after the club were relegated in 2008 and an eventual resurgence back to the top flight ended with another relegation in 2025.
The club then had their registration refused to play in Liga 2 or Liga 3 and instead started the season in the Porto district league from which they dropped out after playing just three games.
In a sad demise, the former Portuguese champions have now reached the end of the road, the club ceasing all operations after 123 years.
In a bid to keep the name of the club and team going, attempts are now being made to launch a phoenix club.
