Former Leeds United Championship boss Kevin Blackwell has made an EFL managerial return at the age of 67 at a League Two side.
Having been assistant boss at Leeds under Eddie Gray, Blackwell was appointed manager of Leeds following the club’s drop to the Championship in the summer of 2004 and after an initial 14th-placed finish, Blackwell took the club to the 2006-27 play-off final.
Leeds were one game away from a return to the Premier League but the Whites suffered a 3-0 defeat to Watford and Blackwell eventually left the club the following September.
Blackwell went on to have spells in charge of Luton Town, Sheffield United and Bury - his time in charge of Bury back in 2012 and 2013 having been his last job in outright charge of an EFL side.
Blackwell, though, who then had various coaching roles at other EFL sides followed by stints in Thailand and Poland, has now been named the new interim manager of League Two side Crawley Town a short term basis amid the club’s hunt for a new permanent manager.
A statement from the club read: “Crawley Town Football Club can confirm that Kevin Blackwell has been appointed Interim Manager on a short-term basis, while the club concludes its recruitment process for a new permanent manager.
“The search for our next permanent manager is at an advanced stage. We have interviewed a number of strong candidates, identified our preferred targets and are working towards finalising the appointment.
“Brings extensive experience of English football”
“Kevin will be joined by Jordan Tait, who will serve as Assistant Coach during this period. Together, they will take responsibility for first team training and lead the side into Saturday’s fixture.
“Kevin brings extensive experience of English football, including managerial spells at Leeds United and Sheffield United. Kevin as assistant to Neil Warnock, also has 9 promotions and extensive experience in rescuing relegation-threatened clubs.
A statement from KB Sports and Leisure read: “We understand our supporters’ frustration with how the season has started, and we share their determination to see Crawley move forward.
“We have made significant progress in recruiting our next permanent manager and are working hard to conclude that process. This is an important appointment for the club, and we want to give our chosen manager the best possible foundation to succeed.
“Kevin and Jordan Tate will provide experienced leadership during this short transition. Their immediate focus is preparing the players for Saturday, and they will have our full backing.
“We’re grateful to them both for stepping in and to our supporters for continuing to stand behind the team. We need everyone pulling together as we begin this next chapter.”
