15 warm-hearted photos take you back to Wetherby in the 1970s

It was the decade which kick started the recycling revolution in a Leeds market town.

Householders in Wetherby were being urged to keep waste paper apart from general household refuse with bin men putting it into a trailer. This was the early 1970s and these wonderful photos capture a year in the life of the town and its residents. Shops, restaurants and pubs as well as news stories making the news headlines are all featured in this gallery of memories. Satelitte villages including Scarcroft, Thorner and Bramham are also featured. The image are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
