The photo from November 1945 looks south along Duke Street towards Marsh Lane roundabout and was taken from either the railway embankment by Duke Street or from Duke Street railway bridge. Marsh Lane approaches from the left corner and continues across the image to meet both Kirkgate, leading off to the right, and East Street, following the edge of the roundabout on the right. The road to the left side of the roundabout is not named on maps. Garden Street leads up from Marsh Lane on the far left. St. Peter's graveyard is in the foreground, right. The photo is one of 12 charting life around the area, found on the edge of Leeds city centre, during the Second World War. The horror of the conflict was brought home when Marsh Lane Goods Station suffered a direct bomb hit during air raids. The photos are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
