1. Kirkstall Road in the 1950s
This view of Kirkstall Road was taken in October 1959. On the left is a shop selling pet food, there is a notice in the window advertising horse meat for sale. Moving right is 186 advertised 'For Sale', 184 is listed as run by Nazir Mohamed and is possibly a fish and chip shop. 2. Kirkstall Road in the 1950s
Kirkstall Road Railway Viaduct, built between 1840-1852 to carry the Leeds to Harrogate line. The long single storey building is the business of Harold Barrett Ltd, motorcycle dealer. A B.S.A stockist also selling Vespa, Lambretta scooters. On the right edge part of the yard belonging to Cox Brothers scrap metal dealers can be seen, the car is parked on Viaduct Place. 5. Kirkstall Road in the 1950s
The first shop on the left is number 202 Kirkstall Road, premises of W.N. Howden, engraver. Next 200 is Harry Yates and son, leather goods manufacturers. Bosomworth Furnisher offering new and second-hand goods is 198. At 196 Ada Nicholls has a drapers shop, 194 is Ada Chadwick selling tobacco and cigarettes. 6. Kirkstall Road in the 1950s
On the left Viaduct Place has a parked car and motor cycles, part of the business of Harold Barrett Ltd, which is on the left, out of view. Moving right is number 242 Cox Brothers scrap metal dealers, they also dismantled machinery and had premises on Talaverd Street. Next 240, 238 are houses.
